In Texas, she made history
You’re no match, Mr. Perry
Can’t drown out that smart lass Wendy
You may be fine and dandy
But today women scream, for victory
Above limerick is in honor of Wendy Davis the brave, committed senator in Texas who spoke for 13 straight hours without a bathroom break on Tuesday, June 25, 2013 in order to kill a bill that would dramatically reduce access to abortion in the state. The bill bans abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy in Texas, severely limiting access to medication-induced abortions and regulates first-trimester abortion clinics as ambulatory surgical centers. While Wendy Davis held the floor, she was not allowed to go to the bathroom breaks or lean on anything. However, just as she neared her 13 hour period, in a clearly illegal move, the Republicans began a vote and the bill passed. The Democrats screamed to drown out the vote, unsuccessfully. Technically it was voted in after midnight and there will be many debates on its illegality. Meanwhile here is to the spirit of Wendy Davis. In 2011, she had staged filibuster against cuts in school funding. Kudos to her courage, her commitment, and her tenacity. Let us #standwithwendy.
