Side Effects – Movie Review
Side Effects is a murder mystery and the genius is in the name of the movie :). This is a thriller, starring Rooney Mara and Channing Tatum, a successful New York couple. Their world turns upside down, when Tatum goes to jail and Mara goes through episodes of anxiety. Tatum is finally released but Mara’s anxiety does not subside and she gets treated with anti anxiety drugs, with questionable side effects, pushed by large campaigns, bank rolled by big pharma companies. Political point here?
Mara’s previous psychiatrist (Catherine Zita-Jones) and her current psychiatrist (Jude Law) discuss the patient and the medications. “ Prozac, Welbutrin, Effexor…. Maybe she’s a candidate for one of these newer meds, Ablixa”, says Zeta-Jones. Ablixa is implicated in some serious side effects, including sleep walking. However, Rooney insists she is feeling better on the medication and stay on it, albeit with interesting changes in behavior. Along with the psychiatrist, the viewers also wonder are there ever any good side effects or a drug commercial that says, “may cause extreme awesomeness”. The story takes an unexpected turn with disastrous consequences for the couple. “Side Effects” is a great name for this movie in an age where information is freely and amply available to doctors AND patients. Directed by Steven Soderberg, the movie will keep you on the edge of your seats and I rate it a 4.0 on a scale of 1-5, with 5 being excellent.
